i've seen all the movies listed above (and the best one’s missing!), but you should know that they were directed by Miyazaki.

there are multiple series which he animated (not directed) in his earlier days, which are even better... they're ancient though so I doubt any of you would like them (with all the 3-D animation nowadays! for shame!). but i would highly recommend watching any of his earlier stuff. they're amazing.

examples:
Anne of Green Gables
Rascal The Raccoon
Heidi, Girl of the Alps
A Dog of Flanders
3000 Miles in Search of Mother (beautiful)
Lupin III

Perinne's Story (Miyazaki's friend and animation partner, Takahata, worked on this) - also amazing
Daddy Long Legs - Miyazaki had nothing to do with this one, it's just my favourite of all time. (the company he used to work for created it though)

i doubt you could get your greasy hands on them though, unless you live in japan or the middle eastern. sorry!

it's really sad actually. none of the new anime series touch on [childhood and all the essential subjects associated, like the old ones did... i am so happy and glad that i got to see these series when i was a child. and i feel bad for all of you who didn't because they weren't available. you can't find stuff like these on tv anymore. violence, sex, and supernatural powers though? it's a buffet! (I’ll always love you Batman, you’re an exception darling) having these shows on tv definitely goes under the positives for living in Iran (along with many others, beautiful country).

from all the Miyazaki anime I've seen, old and new, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind would have to be my favourite. i'm surprised and disappointed that it's not included in the poll! Appalled actually!!
he both wrote and directed it and needless to say that it's among my favourite top 3 anime movies, old and new. Frick it’s so damned good. The utter definition of beauty in every possible aspect.

i was really disappointed when i saw Spirited Away. the inclusion of 3-D animation was uncalled for... i hate 3-D, unless it's of life-form. as beautiful as some of the 3-D scenes were, they were unflattering for Spirited Away. same thing goes for Howl's Moving Castle, though it was much much better and flattering! but still, 3-D doesn't work for Myiazaki. one thing i loved about him was that he stuck to 2-D, and made everything more realistic than 3-D ever could.

one other thing that i love about his work, is that everything seems to be connected. there are subtle references to his old projects in his new movies, and i absolutely love noticing them!
his last movie’s due next year, but his son will carry the legacy =) which reminds me! Tales From Earthsea is his son’s first movie, it’s worth watching for sure.

i would have really enjoyed being his friend during his early childhood. i think we'd have a heck of a great time inventing and creating.

i need to watch anime again.

Although I do not like Lupin, Rupan sansei: Kariosutoro no shiro was a good movie. You are right on target when you say America never got to see those other titles although I do briefly remember watching Heidi, Girl of the Alps and A Dog of Flanders when I was a kid but I do not remember much.

On the 3d subject I think there is always a place for it in movies, The visuals that can be offered through a high polygon render with a high res texture can be rewarding and visually stunning. On a different subject such as Shinji Aramaki's AppleSeed (2004) can be a great example but Miyazaki is one of the last few traditional animators, he relies purely on skill rather than computer technology so I guess I can agree with you that it is getting difficult to find classic animators as good as Miyazaki without running into 3d/CG elements but when he does use it I think it suits him, maybe his son might move in another direction, with the masses and technology. It is nothing bad, just that I hope he never forgets his roots.

"Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" and Katsuhiro Otomo's "SteamBoy" are next on my list, I heard a great deal about these 2 movies and im looking forward to watching them. Still Howls is in my top 5.

i saw AppleSeed, and quite frankly i wasn't impressed. it was top notch comparatively but personally i just don't find 3-d anime visually aesthetic, partially because i grew up watching the classics. 2-d is just more magical to me, it's the epiphany of talent illustrated on paper. you can cheat your way into talent with 3-d, actually, you just need to be technology savvy! naw naw, obviously you need talent too.

i know you're studying 3-d (if i'm not wrong last time i talked to you you were working with maya which is quite impressive) so i hope you won't take anything i;ve said to heart.

and Miyazaki junior's all right. Tales From Earthsea was quite good! i always thought Miyazaki was immortal, the thought of him retiring never crossed my mind! i was heartbroken to say the least. i think GOOD 2-d is as good as dead, sadly.

and i'm glad to hear they showed some of those shows in america, of all countries. not the best ones, but hey, i still eat my side salad.

I am a game artist, so in my program I did study 3d as well as 2d. More 2D than anything, traditional is always my favorite because it is where I began. Most artist forget this and continue to do just digital while their traditional suffers. One of these days I want to create a series of some sorts, probably with one of my personal characters, a female part no less. I have always wanted to create my own series, something along the lines of AFRO SAMURAI but with more content.

3D takes skill, I mean you have to learn how to do it properly, there is still anatomy and structure to think about as well. Granted it takes much more gull to get the job done by hand, but movies like transformers could not be possible without 3d and cg elements. Like anything or anyone Technology develops for better or worse over time, sometimes that development takes a wrong turn for anyone else that is not interested, Thats the name of the game. I wish most artists (An artist in any field) would not rely so much on the program. Pencil and paper is for sure the most rewarding art anyone can do, as you say. Feels good to do it all by hand.

"Feels good to do it all by hand."
sure does. :o i'm talked about animating.

3-d works in movies with owen wilson and brad pitt yes. i just don't think 2-d and 3-d mix well. it should be one or the other.

let me know what you think of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind once you see it. i'd love to know your opinion.

oh man! i almost forgot Sherlock Hound! bahahahaha, i loved that show! it was absolutely genius! haha... animals as people! i loved shows like that.

oh oh! what about Whisper of the Heart?? Miyazaki worked on it, anyone seen it? also one of my favourites. i constantly get goosebumps whenever i watch WOTH or NOTVOTW. ILMAIWTHHBHIASSOAB!!!! ---> a dirty message for Miyazaki.
that's it, it's time to get them studio ghibli movies out of the closet! i'm partying tonight! =D

I've finally seen all of Miyazaki-sama's movies save for two, and I must say the most compelling was Princess Mononoke. I believe that it had a great concept, beautiful art, and even more beautiful characters. Incorporating the traditional Japanese "obsession", I guess, with spiritual connections and historical references was an ingenious idea.

Another one I really liked was Spirited Away. Modern-day life clashed with the, as I said before, spiritual connection, and even then it was very captivating with the art and concept.

I believe that Miyazaki is an artistic and cinematic genius. He isn't afraid to throw together random pieces of today's society with fantasy and magic (like in Porco Rosso and The Cat Returns).
