>OT was that an insult of the Vikings?
//one who's proud of her country's history (Sweden Very Happy )

++Still OT ..... Viking is a verb. It was what people did. The Norsemen went viking. As in, "See you in a year or two, honey. I'm going viking. If I make it back alive, I'll bring you some nice loot." Wife kisses him on the cheek and says, "That's nice, dear. Be careful but do keep an eye out for a nice Celtic penanular broach for me."

But seriously, Kenshin is not a ninja or a samurai. Ninjas always have to have a mask on when they kill someone, and samurais dont sneak up on people like that and kill them. So he's just some random warrior.

++Nope. History 20 year maven here. The people are Norse. Viking is what they did. Other Europeans mistakenly started calling them Vikings and the term took on a negative connotation. In their home country, it was an honorable profession that involved as much trading as it did raiding. :D

And on topic, I don't think Kenshin ever attacked anyone from behind. He might have suprised them but he always faced them.

Norse and nordic is the religion, but you can also say nordic people, same as you say Slavic mythology and Slavic people. But viking is a noun, the last time I checked the dictinary does not lie.

Off Topic last time, promise ... in this thread at least.

Did a quick Google using Viking is a verb and came up with seven references on the first page. Here’s a clip from one of the best. I really have been researching history for twenty years. It is one of the reasons I enjoy Anime especially those based in history and legend and RK/Sam X is one of the best.

The Vikings

The Vikings are the most famous Scandinavians, but what do we know about the Vikings? Here are the three most common misconceptions about the Vikings.

What is the difference between Norse and Viking?

"Norse" is the name we give to the Germanic tribes who emigrated and settled in Scandinavia around the year 1000 BC. In the 8th century AD, the Norse started building fine and very versatile ships that allowed them to travel long distances. This was the beginning of the Viking age.

The Norse society was composed by farmers, slaves and chieftains or aristocrats. Helped by the speed of their ships, some of the farmers and chieftains would become pirates during the summer and would go to raid and pillage foreign villages. These were the Vikings.

"Viking" was a verb used to describe a temporary lifestyle. Most Norsemen would stay in their villages for all their life, but some young and adventurous farmers would go "viking" or raiding for some months or for some years to earn their living on piracy.

Therefore, all Vikings were Norse, but not all Norsemen were Vikings.

one last thing, ok you may be right that viking WAS a way to describe the lifestyle of the nordic people, but that does not mean we should stop referring to them as viking.
A pharaoh was originally a name for a sacred temple, and now it is the name if a egyptian king. Words change and adept new meanings.

Words do take on new connotations as time goes by but the origin never does. It is always useful to know the root of things. Not all that long ago "gay" just meant "cheerfful."

Sorry to bore you Kenshin. Pitt and I just like to exercise our brains now and again. Thanks, Pitt.
