Its a little late of a reply on this thread, but oh well, if you see this you see this.
So best guitar eh? well john petrucci is named so thats a good start.......dream theatre is good and is progressive rock/metal, if you want the best songs with the best and most technical guitars, progressive metal/rock, anything prog is what you are looking for, all these radio bands suck for guitar in comparison.
Bands like Gordion Knot and Spastic Ink and Blotted Science are the best, literally destroys anything else. Ron Jarzombek is the guitarist for all three bands and you cannot praise him enough, masterful playing, probably the best technical guitar player on the planet (alive) right now. Shawn Lane IS the best guitar player to ever exist, he takes you beyond ANYTHING you have ever heard in all ranges of emotions. RIP Shawn.....
Buckethead is another amazing guitar player, he has more cds out then probably anyone, over 25 solo cds alone, and more collaborations then you can think of.
Bands like Death and Cynic have amazing guitar as well, along with all other instruments, the genre "Death Metal" CAME from the band Death RIP chuck....not from "death" lyrics and all that BS you hear, it has nothing to do with death, its the fact that Death (band) was the first of its kind and the genre was dubbed after them.
Between the buried and Me is a good one, so is Dark Hall, Opeth is amazing.
Cynic, Gordion knot, Spastic Ink, Blotted Science and Dark hall all are progresive metal/jazz fusion, so the artists are beyond good, they are UN BLEEPING BELIEVABLE, best artists on the planet, also Shawn Lane is in the same boat.
So anyways, if you choose not to listen to these bands I mentioned.........your loss, slash and all those cats, zakk wylde, all them.....have NOTHING on these guys I mentioned skill wise or creating music wise, so please enlighten yourself and you will see.

none of the names you mentioned except maybe Buckethead come even close to being the "best" Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Dime Bag Darrel, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, and Slash are all way better.

and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Don't forget him. Wait what about BB King and Eric Clapton? they're damn good. Stevie Ray is one of
the best along with Hendrix and Halen. [nods]

For the love of Satan, can any of you people look outside this and the last century?
Even the term "Best" is never been so inappropriately used.
Music is flavor, sugar, spice and everything nice. There is nothing that is "best" or "worse". There is no such thing as bad muisc.
