Well Star wars and LOTR were going to be trilogies from the start so I dont think they count as regular sequels. (tho the second three star wars were a seperate trilogy)

No the longest running series of movies is the Bond franchise. They're on what is it now? 16? 17? 18 if you count "Never Say Never Again"
And there are 6 Star Wars films
Star Wars episode I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars episode II: Attack of the Clones
Star Wars episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Star Wars episode IV: A New Hope
Star Wars episode V: The Emipre Strikes Back
Star Wars episode VI: Return of the Jedi
Rumor or maybe wishful thinking from fans want another 3 to take place after SW: ROTJ, but I find that unlikely. And the last 3 Star Wars movie are offical Star Wars canon, so they count. They're not a sequel they're prequels.
There are also quite a number of Star Trek movies, at least 8 of them, but they all got kind of wimpy after Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Hey, let's not forget the horror genre: Friday the 13th Part Nth; Nightmare on Elm Street part Pi-cubed; Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part...well, there's a lot of parts ('cause there's a chainsaw in the movie--watch where you swing that...well, there's more parts now...)
My point is that Hollywood runs on 4 things: original ideas, derivatives of original ideas, knockoffs of original ideas, and media crossovers.
It's always been that way ever since there was a Hollywood. The only difference today is that, thanks to the many channels on TV, the internet, and the explosion of genre-based print media, we now get more hype than ever before concerning Hollywood's output.
That, and with the explosion of alternative entertainment outlets, Hollywood is desperate for money. Thus, not only had Hollywood cranked up its output, we now know all about faster and for longer periods of time...and can become jaded with all of it sooner.
By the way, I'd say that Hollywood's percentages for the categories listed above are 10%, 20%, 50% and 20%. (The overhyped "The Island" flick now in the theaters? A remake of the older "The Clonus Horror". See what I mean?)

That's true, especially for the horror genre. i haven't seen any actual good horror movies for a long long time. i'd say the best one i've seen recently would have to be the Boogeyman and that was only because the main character actually found the guts to fight back, barely. And i do know there's other better horror movies around but i'm talking about just came out.
i wish we could see something that hasn't been rehashed a dozen times to where there's no originality in it.
