Because you're new and have few posts. It doesn't really mean that you're stupid, more like you're new, and is part of ranking system. You're ranking changes depending on your posts.

Anyway, you need the URL for an avatar that's no bigger than 100x100 pixels. You click on Profile, find Avatar Control Panel, and put the URL in the box. You can also get an avatar by clicking on Show Gallery and picking the one you'd like.
