Yeah Kenshins parents died before the first movie and he was bought by slave traders. Then Kenshin (who was named Shinta at that time) and the other slaves and traders were attacked and a couple kind slaves died protecting him. Hiko came in right before Kenshin was gonna be killed and killed the attackers. Then Hiko named him Kenshin and promised to teach him swordsmanship.

conclusion of what Angel of Death said: you never see Kenshins parents. Instead some slave traders fill the role in the first movie, 'Trust'; they treated him as their own. They die protecting Kenshin. Hiko comes and saves Kenshin from some swordsman. then teaches him the art of Swordsmanship. he also changes his name from Shinta (meaning 'heart pure'), to Kenshin, (meaning 'sword heart')

I dont think they tell about the mother they only say he was slave of sors like work prostitution and they got attacked kenshin"shinta"the name he was given then his master gave him the name of kenshi himura.
