A Green Paradise

Post by stormsangel »

Just a short story I wrote
--------------------
A Green Paradise

She had lived in this town all her life. Seen every corner, every rock, and knew every stone that made up the wall that surrounded the gray-coloured town. Or so she'd thought, for Evi, as her name was, was about to be proved wrong.

She walked along the same path she'd taken for years, directly parallel to the wall that surrounded the place that she lived. She was fed up with the same old boring routine, day after day, week after week; it took all her strength for her not to start screaming. But deal with it she did, for she knew places in the town that nobody else knew; ones she'd discovered as a young girl, determined to explore every nook and cranny and break the routine.

Evi thought back to those times, the times when it was easy for her to sneak away, but back then she had been smaller almost invisible. She remembered that every new thing she'd found, whether it was a small engraving or some sort of broken crockery, had filled her with a strange thrill. A thrill that lay in the fact that this finding was hers and hers alone, her own little secret in a place where such things were almost impossible.

She was brought out of her memories by something that sparkled in the corner of her eye. Evi turned towards the wall, trying to locate what exactly had caught her eye. When she found it, she knew instantly that it was some sort of metal, the type of metal that had long since vanished from her town. Evi scratched the area around the small sparkle, attempting to pry the stone and mortar away and to find out what exactly it was that she was looking at.

It turned out that what Evi had found was a door. It was a small door and probably if it hadn't been for the heavy rains a few days ago, the layer of dirt that had covered it would never have been removed and she never would have found it nor the thing that lay beyond it.

Evi pushed the small door open and realised that she would have to crawl through and even as small as she was it'd be a tight squeeze. She wriggled through the gap and leaving the door slightly ajar behind her. She had crawled a few more seconds before realising that she could stand up her without a problem.

As she looked around her, Evi realised that she was now inside the wall.

"Now how is it that after years of exploring this town I only discover this, now?" she asked herself.

Then she shrugged; it was probably because as a child, even a slightly rebellious one, going too close to the wall had never been something she'd been able to do with ease. Even now, her heart was beating at an abnormally fast pace.

Evi walked slowly forward, cautiously following the tunnel as it twisted and turned. She wondered how much time had passed, probably only a few minutes but it felt like she had been walking for hours. Not only that but there was a tense excitement running through her veins. This was always the feeling exploring had always brought her and she relished it and the memories it brought with it.

Lost in her thoughts, Evi didn't notice a small step in front of her and went sprawling along the ground, grazing her hands and producing a small tear in her jeans. She fervently hoped that her mother wouldn't notice. Slowly getting up, she looked down at the step she had tripped over and then to the wall next to it.

There it was another small metal door, camouflaged among the gray stones. Feeling around for the handle, which would open the door, Evi pondered as to why these doors were here in the town's wall in the first place. Maybe it was an escape route? Maybe it was a secret passage used by spies? She didn't know.

Finally finding the handle, she pulled the door open and crawled outside. Squinting her eyes against the sunlight, Evi looked around her and gasped. In front of her was the most beautiful landscape she had ever seen.

Large trees covered in green leaves towered over her. The grass beneath her feet was tall and lush and the flowers! There were no words that Evi could think of that could possibly describe the vast and colourful array of flowers that currently surrounded her. And in front of her a small winding path that lead towards a sparkling blue pond, with lily pads and reeds. Above her, Evi heard a chirping. She looked up to see; in one of the forked branches of the trees was a nest, with three tiny cheeping baby birds.

This place was like nothing she had ever seen before, neither in books nor in the paintings that covered the Main Hall's walls. Evi had never thought that something like this was lying beyond the boundary of the wall. The Council had always said it was only desert, but she wondered, had they looked over the wall in recent times? Or were they just as scared of it as she had been? But Evi knew she didn't really care, for this place was now hers.

It was a green paradise that she had never thought existed, a place where everything was in harmony and filled with vibrant colours. And most of all completely opposite to the world she had grown up in.
