Help! Trying to find old anime from the 80's

Okay. I am looking for an anime, which was shown on either Cinemax or HBO in the early to mid 80's. There were a bunch of people on Earth who get the help of people across the galaxy to save Earth from a giant robot or monster that is going to destroy earth. Now I am not positive, but I recall a dog-like alien that had these blasters on his knuckles. If anyboy has any clue or hint
