Singing situation.

Post by josh »

At my school, there are a bunch of bands that always play music with no vocals. I play guitar, and quite a few of my mates want to play some music with me at assemblies and other music venues at our school.

Problem is, there are like no singers(clearly everyones too scared, in my year level anyway. There are some older singers!) So I have decided, that I'm gonna have to learn to sing as everyone else is probably just too pussy. If I get good it will come in handy for open stage nights at bars when Im older too :)

I was practicing singing yesterday. I can play and sing a few songs. Mainly easiier ones. Knocking on Heavens door(GnR), Nothing ese matters(metallica), I could have lied(RHCP), Thumbing my Way(pearl Jam).

I dont know any techniques or anything, haven't found much on the internet. So I'm wondering, do any of you sing and have tips for me? Perhaps song recommendations keeping in mind I play guitar at the same time.

A lot of songs I like to play have too hard timing to sing with, for now anyway. Aint talkin bout love(Van Halen) and Alive, Yellow Ledbetter (Pearl Jam) so on... :(

You can practice with your voice. Try to run laps, it will give you more energy coming from your stomach to help your singing voice. Such as that would not make you easier to get out of breath when you're singing loud. Trust me, it will work. It works for my friend, so it should work for you too. ^-^  :heh:

^ they say a fair bit about singing. XD

Depends what type of singing your going to do, I do classical singing so I'm not much help. All I can say is if for some strange reason you decide to sing classical or well, basically any other genre, be prepared to get lots of phlegm in your throat, dry throat and obviously, running out of breath quickly. When singing, always have water with you. To wash down any phlegm or just to get rid of the dry feeling. Do warm up exercises on your piano. Just play a scale then sing it. Do mouth exercises. Loosen up your body and do breathing exercises.

Don't eat stuff like ice cream, ice blocks, or anything cold before you sing. Or anything sweet for that matter.

You should try mastering the pieces before you sing with them, so that it doesn't distract you while playing. After you got the piece under control just sing without the music first. Or get someone else to play for you or listen to a recording. It's easier to run through the whole song first, then go back to parts that you think didn't come out too well.

Hope some of that helped A-Man.

I'll check with my singing teacher for you.

Oh? I used to practice with my voice by having water beneath my neck and sing... I don't know much how that improves your voice, but I heard it somewhere.... ](*,) 8-[

I don't do much singing, and when I do, it's love songs on the radio. My mom told me that for warming up, it's good to practice a scale on the piano, to get the right pitch I think. Always keep water with you....oh, practice diaphram! I play flute, so diaphram is really important. My teacher told me to practice diaphram, take a piece of paper, hold it on a wall, take a deep breath and see how long you can keep the paper there without taking a breath. It might sound ridiculous, but it helps a lot.
