The main character is Ichigo and the girl is Rukia. There was a hollow attack and Rukia got severly injured saving Ichigo. She transferred her power to Ichigo and he became a "temporary" shinigami. Ichigo and Rukia met when Rukia snuck into Ichigo's house while following the presence of either a ghost or hollow (can't remember which).
