Batman Begins: waayyyy more than an action film
Batman Begins: waayyyy more than an action film
Okay guys, I think this has a minor spoiler. But I've heard more than one reviewer and newscaster talk about it. So i'm going to assume that it is safe to disclose it.
When I heard Spiderman 2 being raved about as one of the best comic book adaptations ever...I was like...WOW...awesome movie that spiderman 2 is going to be.
But, I came out of the movie unimpressed with the story and ending of spiderman 2. Unless you're one of the 3 people left alive in this world who hasn't seen this movie- if you were I really don't give a damn anyway so....
The movie didn't end with doc ock dying in a cool manner. He just swallowed water and died like a wussy. I mean..he didn't even eat any beans and kill himself like that guy in se7en. Lame!
BATMAN: BEGINS.....is a whole new beast. I went into this movie with extremely high expectations for the director who has created a revolutionary thriller in memento and created the gripping Insomnia. Needless, to say my expectations were lived up to.
The theme of the movie is fear. If you don't know this...then get the hell off these forums because you're not a movie lover. I declare it.
Fear is much more intricately explored in this movie, if you watch it and pay attention for its 2 hr + running time. I can proudly say that I have done so, because I love Batman.
Bale, coming off an excellent run from the Machinist, is the...well he's not the greatest batman. People who say so ....are lame and unappreciative of Micheal Keaton and Val Kilmer. Who were great in their own right.
Now, you still with me? Kay, good.
Well the movie explores fear, with great precision as one would expect from a director of thrillers(pardon my redundancy). Anywho, the movie explores a realistic fear. The central conflict, well i'm not revealing any of the spoilers, trust me, I promise, , is a realistic conflict involving biological warfare.
That was an extremely smart decision, the fear factor(don't sue me) is fear itself. Even extending outside the movie. The disaster that batman averts here is something we worry about everyday that terrorists could do to us. Which struck me as a brilliant move on the part of christopher nolan. Kudos to you Mr. Nolan on your kick ass script. Mr Nolan's brilliance also extends to his directional technique which insists on making this film dark in tone and visualization. Keeping batman in the dark and shadow's was excellent. Batman this time around seems agressive and down right scary to look at(for those who have seen it: the interrogation part[don't worry you won't know what i'm talking about even after seeing the movie unless you really think hard about it]).
Finally, his imagery of other's fears is down right brilliant. One more thing to add: stop comparing this to tim burton's movies. If you do, you are automatically stupid because: Tim Burton's style emphasized the cartoonish and colorful nature of gotham. This has a completely different tone. So don't be an idiot and downplay Mr. Burton's abilities. Thank you. Pleasseeee somone talk to me because i'm aching to discuss this with a cinephile such as yourself.

Im deffinately going to see it.
I felt like a race horse in a world without racetracks or a champion college footballer suddenly confronted by Wall Street and a business suit, his days of glory shrunk to a little gold cup on his mantel with a date engraved on it like a tombstone.

As you said, fear adds a whole new element to the movie. In the first scene with Batman attacking the drug dealers, the way he took them down from the shadows made it feel like a horror movie in reverse.
This movie actually made a lot of sense, which many movies involving superheros fail to do. The plot was borderline credible. I get irritated when the bad guys get their hands on some ridiculous weapon that has no use outside of the villain's plans.
I do think that Christian Bale played Batman pretty well, but that may be because it has been many years since I've seen the older movies. Because of this, I am also unable to compare this movie to Tim Burton's.

I know! Chistopher Nolan....did not disappoint me...the director of Memento and Insomnia was at his peak.
I loved how batman made me poop my pants when he was interrogating that corrupt cop.
The credible plot was awesome...but a bit flawed...

The realistic thing with biological toxigens in the water system is a nod to our present day fears of terrorists doing the same thing. By doing this Christopher Nolan gave the audience an increased sense of possibility. But there was a plot hole, the microwave was supposed to evaporate all water...human bodies are 90 percent water...see where I'm going with this? Also, the action wasn't that great, but it wasn't horrible either. Regardless, this movie was pretty freaking awesome.

You're right, I completely forgot about the water in the body. I usually pick up on plot holes like that...

Actually, Ive been re-reading Tim Burton's autobiography, Burton on Burton, and it says quite the opposite. Here's a quote.
"Hamm and burton fashioned a dark, brooding, deeply psychological story for the Caped Crusader, which, like Mankiewicz's script, pitted him against the joker but was set in a dark, hellish version of Gotham city that eschewed the campness of the Batman TV series and instead went back to Kane's original comic strips of the forties."

I saw it last week, and I was exremely impressed. It was memorable. Batman Begins has an absorbing solidity, and is the grittiest, most intriguing Gotham yet. The city is fantastically made and filmed.
The storyline and it's many layers were conveyed brilliantly, the underlying theme of fear was eclectically profound and and elicited a range of emotions. The portrayel of Bruce Wayne is so real and engaging. Viewers can connect. He's human.
However in this chronical, Bruce Wayne's alter-ego is chilling, absolutely unnerving. I was scared! I loved this new Batman, so dark and shadowy. Combined with the man beneath, and the well articulated story behind him, Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne, was comprehensively the most thrilling, fascinating and captivating super-hero character ever!

If you think that the action and fightscenes were lacking i disagree. The action was awesome...and at least, it was the way it was meant to be. In the action scenes, rather than actually seeing Batman doing cool movies,(like matrix or jackie chan style, lol) you just see a bunch of bad guys flying around. The audience only sees glimpses of black and shiny metal, just like the bad guys do. This is an interesting way of showing the fights and is consistant with the way the viewer thinks about Batman. It makes him seem even more more wraithlike and scary. Also very brutal. For example i think I flinched when Batman smashed that guy into the mirror in his first encounter with scarecrow, before he got lit of fire.
what do you think?
