What I think about... .hack//dusk

Post by Jovenitto »

Well, i had too much time on my hands yesterday, waiting for my new Full Metal Alchemist episodes (i'll post a review when i finish it, but i like it so far), so I finished viewing .hack//dusk (aka .hack//twilight aka .hack//Legend of Twilight Bracelet).

Obviously, i'm going to compare .hack//dusk with .hack//sign.

IMO, sign was better in almost every aspect.
Most of the dusk characters have a more childish look (much like Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, Beyblade), with small bodies and disproportionate heads. Not my kind of characters. But not all of them were like this: Balmung, Sanjuru, Kamui, all have normal sized bodies (as normal as anime characters get ^_^ ), too bad they're not the main characters...

I can't say I noticed the music very much, unlike the sign episodes. As i'm writing this, i'm trying to remember the music, but nothing springs to mind... low mark on that.

The animation is basically the same (except the characters), so it's more of the good stuff: Good image, excelent backgrounds, great lighting effects...

Looking at the storyline, I think that sign and dusk are on the same level, with advantage to dusk, for one thing only: Less episodes, so the story develops faster. A little less boring than the sign episodes.
But this is natural, since dusk is more centered on the events themselves, and sign is more about the characters and their feelings, and that does take more time to develop.
Anyway, the 12 episodes of dusk are easily viewed, compared to any 12 episodes of sign.
IMO, the series has just the right size.

Adding all up:

Less: Character style, Music
Equal: Overall animation
More: Faster development of storyline.

In my book, this adds up to a 6.8
I would give it a 7.0, but that would be too close to my 8.0 on .hack//sign, and that wouldn't be too fair, since i thought that sign was a much better anime.

That may be because the story ended up being the same incident as .hack//sign, only with a different approach and solution to it. Squeezing both series, the "juice" was basically the same.
Well, i'll be wainting for my FMA episodes. I'm already more than half way through it (last i saw was episode 28 ), so maybe in a week (give or take 2 or 3 days), i'll be posting my review on Full Metal Alchemist. Right now, I think it's almost leveled with Cowboy Bebop and Trigun (very high 8 or maybe even a 9).

See ya next time!!

New evaluation method

Characters: 8
Storyline: 7.5
Animation: 8.5

Overal score: 8.5

I'm introducing a new method of evaluating the animes I review, that will make my life easier.
See my "What I think about... Full Metal Alchemist" post for details.
